Sources
Revenue will come from the following sources:
- download sales
- license sales
- merchandise sales
- voluntary contributions
- paid advertisements
- paid memberships
We're going to make the assumption that most artists will still be thinking in more traditional terms and therefore will not want to release their music under a Creative Commons (or other free-copying) license, at least initially.
The default model, then, is:
- fans can listen to music on GnukeBox for free, perhaps with some level of limitation
- maybe only some tracks are available
- maybe there are a limited number of plays
- fans purchase tracks or albums they like
- once purchased, music is downloadable in a range of freely-copyable formats (lossy and lossless)
Notes
It would be nice if we had a better way of handling music with Creative Commons licenses... artists who CC-license their music should get extra benefits.
